Structural Tuning and Conformational Stability of Aromatic Oligoamide Foldamers

A series of aromatic oligoamide foldamers with two or three pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units as their main folding motifs and varying aromatic building blocks as linkers have been synthetized to study the effects of the structural variation on the folding properties and conformational stability. Crystallographic studies showed that in the solid state the central linker unit either elongates the helices and more open S-shaped conformations, compresses the helices to more compact conformations or acts as a rigid spacer separating the pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide units, which for their part add the predictability of the conformational properties. Abstract CuII and AuIII chlorido complexes bearing the bis(NHC) carbazolide pincer ligand (bimca) were synthesized by transmetallation from the respective lithium complex [Li(bimca)] (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene). In the case of copper, two different molecular structures were obtained depending on the copper source. With Cu(II) chloride the paramagnetic mononuclear [Cu(bimca)Cl] complex is formed and has been characterized by EPR spectroscopy and X-ray structure analysis, while copper(I) chloride leads under oxidation to a dinuclear structure in which two cationic [CuII(bimca)] moieties are bridged by one chlorido ligand. A trigonal prismatic anionic iron(iii) complex of a radical o-iminobenzosemiquinonate derivative: structural and spectral analyses

A new iron(III) complex, [Et3NH][FeIII(L2−˙)2] (1) with a substituted o-aminophenol based ligand is reported. Complex 1 is an anionic complex with a triethylammonium cation in the lattice. It contains two O,O,N-coordinated o-iminobenzosemiquinonate(2−) radical anions with an Fe(III) centre in a high-spin configuration. Soluble homo- and heterometallic coordination polymers containing transition metal cations (Cu(2+), Fe(2+), Co(2+), and Ni(2+) ions) were prepared in a two-step procedure using a polytopic bis(terpyridine)dioxocyclam ligand 1H(2) (dioxocyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-5,7-dione). NMR T1-Relaxation Measurements on Paramagnetic Organolanthanides: An Alternative Tool for Structure Determination in Solution

1H NMR investigations were conducted on four paramagnetic organolanthanides, all bearing the tetraisopropylcyclopentadienyl ligand Cp4i (HC5iPr4) in order to verify whether or not interactions observed in the solid state are maintained in solution. In some cases variable-temperature experiments were necessary to enhance the resolution and determine the best conditions for the study. The 1D NMR spectrum could be interpreted in every case. Complementary 2D COSY experiments allowed the full attribution of the signals. A nickel complex incorporating an N2 O ligand with a rare η2 -N,N'-coordination mode was isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, as well as by IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy augmented by 15 N-labeling experiments. The isoelectronic nickel CO2 complex reported for comparison features a very similar solid-state structure. Computational studies revealed that η2 -N2 O binds to nickel slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 in this case, and comparably to or slightly stronger than η2 -CO2 to transition metals in general. Three‐in‐One Crystal: The Coordination Diversity of Zinc Polypyridine Complexes

The synthesis, structural and photophysical properties of two novel zinc(II) complexes bearing the tridentate ddpd (N,N' dimethyl N,N' dipyridin 2 ylpyridine 2,6 diamine) ligand are presented. Structural investigations have been carried out by single crystal X-ray diffractometry, NMR spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory calculations, revealing a diverse coordination behavior depending on the counter ion. Spectroscopic (UV-VIS and emission spectroscopy) and theoretical techniques (density functional theory and time dependent DFT calculations) have been employed to explore the photophysical properties of the complexes.
Photoswitching of the antiferromagnetic coupling in an oxamato-based dicopper(ii) anthracenophane

Thermally reversible photomagnetic (ON/OFF) switching behavior has been observed in a dinuclear oxamatocopper(ii) anthracenophane upon UV light irradiation and heating; the two CuII ions (SCu = 1/2) that are antiferromagnetically coupled in the dicopper(ii) metallacyclic precursor (ON state) become uncoupled in the corresponding [4+4] photocycloaddition product (OFF state), as substantiated from both experimental and theoretical studies. © 2011 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
Diels–Alder reaction on perylenediimides: synthesis and theoretical study of core-expanded diimides

A one-step reaction for the fusion of aromatic rings to one or both bay areas of perylenediimides using benzynes is presented. Yields as high as 70% for naphthoperylenendiimide 2 and 80% for dibenzocoronenediimide 3 are obtained. The reaction is also carried out using substituted benzynes, heteroaromatic benzynes and substituted perylenediimides. A combined experimental/theoretical approach, based on measuring redox and absorption/emission properties and performing density functional theory calculations, indicates that increasing the π-skeleton of PDIs transversally leads to significant and unexpected changes in the electronic, redox and optical properties.
